Core & Compulsory Courses

    • Foundations of Social Science Health and Medicine (30 credits, term 1):  this module will familiarise students in all SSHM PG programmes with the most important approaches towards understanding health and medicine from the disciplines of sociology, anthropology, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and philosophy and ethics.  Module convenor:Dr Annette Rid . The module is team-taught by different members of SSHM academic staff.

On Thursdays 10 am to 1 pm plus discussion groups in the afternoon.

    • Critical Bioethics  (30 credits, term 1) offers students a critical introduction to the theoretical frameworks used in contemporary bioethics and to a wide range of approaches from philosophy and the social sciences. The module is core (must be taken, and passed) for the students in the Bioethics & Society programme. Module convenor: Dr Silvia Camporesi Please access here the outline for this module.

    • Case Studies in Bioethics & Society (30 credits, term 2) uses a case-study approach to enable students to understand how bioethical controversies and proposed solutions emerge in unique social, political and regulatory contexts. This module is compulsory (must be taken) for the students in the Bioethics & Society programme. Module convenor: Dr Silvia Camporesi

The core courses in Bioethics & Society are taught by Dr Silvia Camporesi and Dr Annette Rid with occasional guest lectures by other faculty of the Department of Social Science, Health & Medicine. Visiting speakers from academia or policy may be invited for special sessions, for example to discuss a case study in their area of expertise.

PART-TIME STUDENTS:

Year 1:

PT students take Critical Bioethics in term 1 (on Tuesdays) and Case Studies in Bioethics & Society (on Tuesdays) in term 2; plus one of the methods modules (either Designing Qualitative Research, or Designing Quantitative Research, or Critical Policy Research) in term 2 (on Mondays or on Thursdays).

Year 2:

PT students take Foundations of Social Science, Health & Medicine in term 1 (on Thursdays); and one optional modules of their choice in term 2.
